Hi all, i suffer from occasional but strong anxiety attacks. It used to be pretty severe every day but over the years i found that i can control it with meditation (this has improved my life by 70% and i swear by it!). My doctor will only prescribe me anti depressants but i dont like taking them as i had a bad reaction to my last prescription a couple of years ago and it made me emotional and suicidal. I dont feel my illness really warrants taking medication every day either, i can live with it most of the time. I work from home and sometimes when i get really busy or stressed the panic and anxiety seems to creep up on me and i become very uncomfortable, nervous, anxious and panicy. I have tried Diazepam thanks to a friend and it really helped. i only suffer from these bad anxiety attacks about 3-6 times in the average month (i keep a diary - that helps a lot too). I thought Diazepam could be the perfect solution but i am just concerned as to HOW addictive they are? Will taking them at the rate of 3-6 times per month put me at risk of tolerance and addiction? any tips are much appreciated... Thanks BeansOnToast

to get those kinds of meds with less visits to an office you'll want to see a psychiatrist. you need to tell him/her what triggers these panic attacks, or if you don't, he/she should help you figure it out. explain to him/her what happens to you during these panic attacks. I've noticed the word "doom" comes up a lot aswell.
but I'd also like to point out the amount of times you said you have one per month. without telling us how severe they are or anything, it sounds like these are just normal anxiety attacks that everyone has. but again, you need to go into further detail with a psychiatrist than you did with us. i would love to see a psychiatrist but that wont happen unless i pay for it. And i cannot afford it. In the UK you have to be very mentally ill to get any mental healthcare (where i live anyway). Otherwise they will just keep patching you up with anti depressants. I am in control of my anxiety most of the time, and i can deal with panic attacks but i just want to improve my quality of life. I want only to do a trial run and I will use Diaz with extreme caution as i have beaten an addiction (not to benzos) many years ago, so i am well aware of how hard it is to beat a habit. i dont think its accurate to say everyone has panic attacks tho, most people dont. My panic attacks are quite typical, i feel extremely anxious, short of breath, hot... i dont get the old feelings of impending doom anymore, like you are dying. My attacks are strong but not severe. Thanks for all the replies!

Thanks BeansOnToast The first avenue I would try with your medical background is to spend some money up front to a private GP (Google for one's in your area and see if you can find our if they have a 'flexible' appproach to precribing what you, their paying customer wants). A 15 minute consult generally costs about Ģ50 but ou could get a nice script for diazepam a script for Diazepam, which is cheap even on a private prescription. Private doctors seem more willing to presrcibe diazepam than NHS, who thinks anxiety doesn't exist and eveyone is depressed. Also, if you want to make sure that you are keeping control, you can discuss tapering off. I would do this all the time, but they do only seem willing to give you a script for Diazepam when that only works sometimes and they have now cut the dosage to 2mgs (why bother?) Anyway, worth a try as I did before resorting to IOPs to look for what does work best for you
