I use ambien on and off , it works if i don't use it too many nights in a row, but i can't help but feel a weird hung over feeling the next day! I don't really like this med at all, but use it only if my insomnia is unbearable, karen

Ambien is a selective gaba agonist. benzos like valium and xanax are non selective gaba agonists. ambien is one of those drugs where it varys a lot from person to person how strong it is. for me it is literally about ten times stronger and more intense than xanax. i lose my judgement on it and cant remember everything from when i was on it. grey outs/black outs. i advise caution with ambien as it packs a punch so much harder than xanax of valium. at least for many people it does, not all. i only took it for a short time afer me and my psychiatrist were going through different drugs for me to try. I havent touched the stuff since

Ambien is a hypnotic type drug I was told. I put my pajamas on before I take one. I don't like it but it is useful on certain nights. This happens to be the one and only drug my husband took from me and said "no more ". It affected my judgement so much that I didn't even realize that something was wrong. Scary, Scary,,

Oh, man, I will never take another Ambien in my life.

The other night I went and got a quarter pounder and some fries from McDonalds. When I got home, I took an Ambien (the first one I've ever taken).

I went into the living room and set my dinner on the coffee table. Then I picked up the T.V. guide and took a bite of my burger.

The next thing I know, my forehead is resting on my quarter pounder bun. Then I remember trying to read the T.V. guide again. The next thing that happened I woke up with my forehead in my french fries.

I AM NOT KIDDING!! I vaguely remember getting into bed and then remembering what happened the next day. It could not have been more than eight minutes between the time I took it and my forehead resting on my quarter pounder!!!!!!!!!!

Ambien and I DO NOT mix!!

yep, takes about 10 minutes to kick in from the time you swallow it, then your gone. dangerious drug . i advise great caution to first time users, becausee you might be one of the certain % of people like me and beetlenut, who respond to ambien intensely

Ambien is an INSOMINA drug! It is meant to be taken right before going to bed. If taken this way it should not be dangerous. People taking it and walking around, watching TV, eating or whatever are missusing it. Take it and lie down to sleep. It works wonders. If it leaves you groggy in the AM half the dose.

Since I work rotating shifts, I like to take ambien to sleep during the day. To me it is a godsend, but it is weird stuff. I am always falling asleep with the tv on, food around, etc. Haven't fallen in my food yet! I have had black outs and gray outs, too. I had some computer equipment delivered and have no idea how it got inside...scary...I was surprised to see it when I woke up.

On the plus side, I feel refreshed when I wake up. Right now I am taking a break from it as it loses its effectiveness over time.

Do be careful with it.

definetely , ambien has to be taken whileyou are ready to stay in bed for the night, i take one only if insomnia persisted for nights and i have no alternative/ but first i am in bed, put the tv on and in 20 minutes shut tv and sleeping, still feel weird in morning, and when i first tried it and took it earlier in the evening thinking it was going to take a n hour to kick in i was higher than a kite. i had cancer and my daughter never saw me bald, i went in herrooom and whi[[ed my wig off and i think i scared her half to death! she was 12! i will never forget that or her. i was high on ambien. i don't like it and like i said only take it when i am on a roll of insomnia. karen

My husband takes ambien off and on for insomnia and he always has a problem remembering things he has done after he has taken it. We can have a conversation or even sex and he won't remember it. It is funny because he can carry on as if normal but not remember a thing. I would never take that drug it would scare me to death not remembering things I've done. flibble

Ive found on the rare occasions Ive used Ambien that it takes effect better on an empty stomach. When Ive eaten and then take it, it doesn't seem to work as well. Anyone else have that experience?

Essentially ALL drugs will get into the circulatory system faster if taken on an empty stomach. In addition, if you're trying to go to sleep, the last thing you should be doing is providing more energy to your body in the form of food.

One problem with this thread is that we're hearing about all of the nightmares of ambien-- loss of memory, intensive dreams, etc. However, if you search the boards, you will find many DBer's who think ambien is a wonder drug. And much of the medical establishment agrees. Although it officially is listed in the PDR as for short term treatment of insomnia, many doctors will use it effectively for long term treatment. While I am not currently taking it, I did so for 7-8 years, with no hangovers, no loss of memory, no tolerance issues, and lots of sleep. Are there others out there with positive responses to ambien?

I work in the restaurant industry and switch back and forth from 1st to 2nd shift.
I will totally agree that this is a wonderful drug if used properly. I take 1 pill right after I brush my teeth and stuff and head straight to bed. As long as I give some effort to keep my mind clear I fall asleep FAST and dont wake up for 8-10 hours. Before if I got home at 4:00AM by the time I fell asleep it would usually be around 7:00AM. But with ambien I am out by 4:30AM. It is a GODSEND to me. Now one thing I will note. If I have too much on my mind and cant stay calm, I need to meditate and take a melatonin. I hope I am not causing some life threatening interaction but it works for me. This is a true story. Ambien should not be abused, you may hurt yourself or others. My friend took 2 10mg and then smoked a bong load, soon after he got roudy, fell all over and hit his head. At first he laughed it off but then he went down and we had to call 911 because he blacked out and was breathing so slow we thought he was gonna die, I was told later we over reacted but hey, at the time you just want to do whats best for your friends...Please be careful.

Ambien never really did it for me- it was not the miracle drug it was supposed to be for me. Same with Sonata, I was rx'd both of them from my PCP and later given Restoril- worked a lot better.

The thing with Ambien is, I always found that it's possible to fight it coming on. If I take it and I'm not in bed with my eyes closed within 20 mins, I will just get disoriented. Not tired at all. If I am actively trying to go to sleep around normal bed time, I do find it helps- but if I need to fall asleep at a given time and I take an Ambien and then go about my business, I don't fall asleep. I get this weird heavy, spacy feeling and it makes me hungry- but if I eat the littlest thing, I get nausea. I'm not even sure if I enjoy the spaciness, I remember only bits and pieces the next day.

Restoril or a high enough dose of another benzo will knock me out when I want, without fail.

Ambien workd for me but I have to take 1 and a half sometimes. Don't flame me because sometimes I take a benzo and them the ambien, then I can sleep. Ambien are so pricey I try to get the zolpidem from IOP's. But there is nothing like the real thing. I will be happy when the gen. is made in USA.

Ambien is a very odd drug. I think it is one of the most unpredictable as to how it is going to work. Seems to affect everyone differently. I have great difficulty falling asleep. The first time I took Ambien it knocked my socks off and I literally fell asleep in minutes & was completely knocked out. I hated it & only took it once and then not for a long, long time. The next experience was that it didn't work worth anything. I would take it with no results or sometimes I would take it after waking up at 3AM and it would NOT help me go to sleep. One of my friends had the same experience or she would fall asleep but only to wake up 4 hours later. This was brand name prescribed Ambien, not generic Zolpidem.

The weirdest thing that I find is that my sister in law swears by it and takes it every night. She has 3 small children under the age of 8. I can't imagine if it did work like it did the first time on me being knocked out like that with 3 small kids in the house. I also question how she has remained on it for over 3 years?? All the ads on TV say that you shouldn't take it for longer than 7 days, etc. She has never said but I'm wondering if she's ordering from OP's? LOL She is very naive and tells everyone that she saw a spider so she has to take a valium and that kind of thing. Gad, I wonder who her Doc is? Just a funny & ironic thing. She is a riot. Dumb as a rock but sweet. Seems to have a pill for everything & talks openly of taking them. I honestly don't think she's an abuser but she sure takes stuff at the drop of a hat! LOL

My Mother is like that and she is 70 something. She tells everyone just what she takes. She has darvion, ambien and ativan and talks freely of when she takes them. I try to tell her SSSHHH....... not everyone needs to know what you take. Her DR is very free to give them to her. I think at her age she has earned the privilege.

Wylefriend, I think it is hilarious. At 70 I think your mother deserves whatever and I'm totally sure she is not an addict/abuser. Gives me a chuckle. Let her be & give her a hug for me!

Does anyone know of any OP's that don't require a phone consult or medical records where I could order Ambien to be delivered overnight or the next day? I'm not trying to bypass the medical hx part of this in general (I do have a hx of chronic insomnia related to other medical problems) - and I've only taken it once before - but I have to go out of town for the coming weekend and have to give a speech. Since I become very nervous I'd like to take a couple of Ambien with me so that I can get some sleep (otherwise I won't be able to get much sleep - I worry so much). I can't get a hold of my family doc (out of town) and if I take OTC products such as Benadryl or Sominex they put me out for the entire next day! As a rule, I never take any benzos because I am hypersensitive to most of them. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! The one time I took Ambien before it didn't seem to give me a "hangover" the next day. Thanks!

Although they are a bit pricey, I've ordered from them three times and was pleased. There is no consultation fee and shipping is $19.95. U.S. based referral service, prescriptions are filled by third party pharmacies.

The first time two times they did Fed Ex overnight standard. The next time, for the same price, they choose Fed Ex second day. Maybe they figure that now that they got me as a customer.... Anyway, make sure you state your delivery needs when you order. Being its already Thursday you may be pushing it for overnight but its worth a shot.

I think once we reach 70 or so we can get just about anything! LOL I say, she should go for it! The funny thing is these people barely take any. My dear sweet mommy is 86 & prides herself on the fact that she's only just started taking Folex for osteo. On the other hand she used to drink a beer or two in her early 50's when she was driving our horse trailer long distances!!!! CAn you believe it???? She was never wasted but still.....

I have taken Ambien before and it has never made me feel "weird" the next day (but different people react differently-of course!) However, I noticed that after about a week of taking it, even double dosing didn't do anything for me. I never fell asleep as quickly as the others have, but I have typed letters that I don't recall what I said in them. Yikes! I'll probably try the Ambien again sometime, since I'm a chronic insomniac, amongst other things. LOL!

LeChat - I feel the same way you do as far as taking them and not sleeping, but not remembering things that I did (although I know I didn't sleep). It's weird - when I was prescribed them, I had tried many other things and nothing worked. So many people have loved Ambien, but I'm not having that kind of luck. However, I do like that there is no type of hangover effect - that is very important to me. If I'm not going to get enough sleep, I certainly don't need more bad feelings to worry about, I don't experience the hallucinations that others feel either. So, not enough sleep from them, but no ill effects either. There has got to be something out there that works, right????

If there is something better out there, I have yet to find it. I've tried melatonin, kava kava, valerian root, trazadone (yuk the next morning!) and a few other prescription sleep aides which I can't recall. So far the only thing that seems to work for me (which I take only when I have a cold) is NyQuil. Other than that, I guess a hammer to the head? LOL. Glad that you and misspiggy have had the same experiences or sorta as I have with Ambien. But again, everyone is different
