I need to know what kind of pharmaceuticals I can use to slow hair loss. I've got a receding hairline, but it's not too pronounced at this point. However, my father has lost most of his hair by 65, so I know that I'm going to lose mine by that point.

What pills are best for this problem? At the same time, what drugs will also regrow hair? Does that exist and what would be good for that?

I'm guessing you are a male, so I would suggest using finasteride, also known as Propecia. You can find it rather cheaply online in liquid form or pill form at some regular online pharmacies. I know of one "research" site that sells this very inexpensive (30$). If you start using it now, it will stop the hair loss from getting any worse, but of course, if you stop taking it, your natural genetics will continue onward :p ..

Of course, there is also Rogaine (OTC) at walgreens..

stay away from rogaine if at all possible(if you stop it at all your hair will shed), start propecia(finasteride) immediately! saw pawmetto is a good supplement as well. rogaine will regrow(only in the back) but i found that the shedding and it irritates ur scalp and made things worse (at least in my case). so try propecia for a few months and if u dont notice a diff start rogaine.

also where can u get it for 30$? the high price for the stuff is KILLING me.

Just a little fun trivia fact...the gene for male pattern baldness is carried on the mothers side.

Yes you really need to look at your mother's father for a glimpse of your future hairline.

Check this out:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nizoral

Nothing proven yet, but I have been using this for a month or two and have noticed a dramatic reduction of hair on the bathroom floor.

ps I tried Propecia once and it had a negative libido effect for me. End of that experiment \:\)

For best results please post that question in the forum called "who offers it"

Propecia and Proscar (much cheaper) are made by the same company and contain the same active ingredient but the dosage is different and they are prescribed for different purposes...

This is one clear case where patients are charged more just because the labs can charge more...
Propecia: Same ingreadient and company... but lower dosage... and higher price...

They can not say the research costs are to blame for the high cost :-)

Indeed, the Wiki article on it says:

 Quote:
Some users, in an effort to save money, buy Proscar instead of Propecia, and split the Proscar pills to approximate the Propecia dosage. Doing so is generally considered unadvisable [sic] if women of pregnancy age are in the household; this is because finasteride, even in small concentrations, can cause birth defects in a developing male fetus. The birth defects involve the development of male genitalia (no such effects have been noted in developing female fetuses). On most product inserts, it will be mentioned that the dust or crumbs from broken Propecia tablets should be kept away from pregnant women.

What's wrong with you, man? This is AMERICA and HAIR is right up there with XBox-360 or whatever. We judge people by their HAIR, not the size of their son's genitalia. OK--maybe the kid grew a second penis or another ear, but hey--HIS OLD MAN HAS A FEW MORE STRANDS OF HAIR!!! And b/c he really doesn't know what he's getting, the old man could end up with NO penis some day!!!

Nephro--you must learn American standards. It's not hard. They are very low. You just need dead protein growing out of your head. Yeah. Dead protein.

Some of you may know the answer to this, I know i checked ont prop. and the other hair cures at one point with my dr. to make a long story short the hair loss is caused by test conversion etc.. so my question was if i take the hair cure , it will basically keep my body from converting test and ultimately I may loose muscle mass but gain some hair?

Just give me the clippers

Epper,

From what I've heard, the best thing to do is take 1mg of the finesteride/proscar each day and ALSO use 5% rogaine twice a day. I think this will only regrow hair toward the back or crown though and not at the front.

I'd say, "Go for the plugs and avoid the drugs." There are warnings about Rogaine and your heart.

"Great head of hair, but that heart attack did him in!"

Yeah...

Where would we be without each other to correct someone on something so unimportant and imcomplete?

Rogaine side effects
If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop using this medication and seek emergency medical attention:
an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives);

chest pain;

irregular or very fast heartbeats;

dizziness or lightheadedness; or

fainting.

Hey K how have you been? I've been on a little this summer. Just catching a few moments to catch up with all the great db buddies. It would be sad to lose one's hair and have an anaphylatic reaction to the rogaine. Maybe they should get an epi pen to go with it. "Lets see: hair or breathing" I don't know hard choice to make. I seriously doubt many have an allergic reaction to it but if they did it could be life threatening if they did. Good thing you and I have more hair than what we need.

I thought you were in health care, mmyp? That's why I was suggesting to think about potential long term effects (b/c every drug we take has a counter effect) for a drug that will work (maybe)only as long as you use it.

That's why I suggested plugs. But if someone wants to use Rogaine or Viagra or anything else, be my guest. I think men need to know that women find them attractive for what's in their brain and heart--not on top of their head. I'd just want my man to stay healthy.

I have to admit, I'd be a bit gutted if I went slaphead before my time. My hair is about the only part of me that still works properly.

I'm sure you would be. It's just so difficult to see so many young women taking drugs to lose weight and guys using drugs to grow hair and in the long run, it's all about good health.

If you've got that, you've got everything.

I am. I was just posting fun back to ya. I didn't mean it to sound preachy if it did. I think the side effects are low but I tend to think treat rather than wait in my approach on most issues. Personal bias. Your cautioned approach is probably a wiser one. Sometimes when I think I am being funny in my mind with a post it comes of rather dudish. Odd sense of humor I have. No harm meant.
