very suprised, so was my boss. But yesterday I was called up and told my job was being eliminated. I was shocked, but hey, I did hate the job. I was lucky to get 6 weeks severence though. They laid off a lot of people, I got a packet describing severance and they listed the positions cut with only ages of people let go and the IT dept got hit hard so it wasn't just me. they said they would fight unemployment either so I am on hold with them as I type. I do have 2 prospects so thats re-assuring. So I am back on the job hunt, hopefully this time I can find somewhere that I am happy this time. kinda happy though that I am outa there, my boss did say it had nothing to do with my performance and he was suprised but had a fealing stuff was happening since there was a weird vibe around. Considering I was only there 4 months, I am happy I got any severence at all. So off to do some projects around the house. Now I can start going to the gym like I did before. And I am confident in my searching that I will find something.

I'm sorry to hear about this, backpain, but sometimes these things are actually a blessing in disguise. If you hated the job, this forced you to get out of there. Now you have the opportunity to find a job that you enjoy. Best to you in your search. LL

Well hopefully you will find a job you like that makes the day go by quicker if its something you enjoy at least you got some severance a lot of people don't' especially after only 4 months. Good luck and hope you find a great job! (and enjoy your time off lol) RNB

Sorry to hear about the job loss BP, but at least you weren't blindsided by their actions. I am a full beleiver in the saying "things happen for a reason". A few weeks ago a good friend of mine was told she would not be offered a contract for her job next year (she is a school teacher). She didn't "love" teaching at this particular school but it was her first year teaching and was very discouraged to say the least when she found out she didn't have her job next year. They did end up offering her a contract after all but not until she had 2 other job offers at different schools. She took one of the other offers (even though her old school begged her to come back) and it was more $ and only 15min from home (vs 50min).
Sounds like you will be fine. Your in a career that there is always a need for.

BP, I have to agree with the over all mentality in this thread and say that I too am a firm believer in everything happens for a reason. I know it probably sound very cliche, and you have heard it over and over, as we all have. But I truly believe that sometimes when bad things happen, it seems most of the time, something good will come out of it. It may take a while, but for me it has never failed. I look back at my life at times I thought I just couldnt bear to hang on any longer, and now I realize they were blessings in disguise. So I hope that you will soon find the reasoning behind this and that you will be blessed in some way.
Hi Backpain.. Iam so sorry you lost your job ... I can relate to being out of work , I worked at my job in NY city for 12 yrs untill my severe neck injury on the job . it does sound like you were not really happy at this place you were working ,so maybe now you will find a place you love , I really wish you all the best ,,, take care sincerely Faith ...
Sounds like a good thing. Getting away from a job you do not like is like sweet delight.
Did you say they "would" fight unemployment? That didn't fit with the rest of the message, like the severance. Some states pay pretty good unemployment, but I think they make you wait until any vacation/severance time was used up before you could start.

I agree with the consensus that it was probably for the best. You weren’t happy there; it caused you stress and you felt inadequate for the position. Hopefully you will spend this six weeks “hitting the pavement” and networking with some of your colleagues. Do you belong to any professional IT organizations? They are very good sources for introductions to many job openings.
It’s getting tough out there in general for employment prospects as many companies are downsizing in our dismal economy. Stay focused and take these six weeks as work time. Spend the 8-9 hours a day you would be at the office and search all the job sites and e-mail/fax out your resume. Make phone calls. Network. Don’t get trapped spending this time doing household projects and most of all, don’t spend it on DB’ers.
Here’s to you finding the job of your dreams . . . .

I am totally on board with everyone on this thread. Last year, I was laid off by a company I *hated*, re: ethics, upper management, control freaks, etc.
It was the best thing that has ever happened to me! Good luck with your job search...things somehow work themselves out, You'll be in a much better place, both emotionally and financially

It worked out for the best backpain. I used to love my job, but since my supervisor took on an a$$hole of an assistant things have been rough. He has made statemnts to me that my daughter occupies too much of my time, meaning I need to sacrafice an hour lunch in order to leave 15 minutes early, and that I should put her up for adoption. He is trying to be jokey jokey about it, but his remarks are totally uncalled for.

I would be going to human resources if a coworker made remarks like that. He is way out of line.

I have been to so many people and even my union, but nothing has been done. I have a new trick up my sleeve and I will post it tomorrow (later in the day) because I am so tired.

hey all, well I am getting unemplyment which actually isn't bad for doing nothing, I get $520.00 bucks a week after they take taxes out and can get it for 6 months plus I got a letter in the mail about the extenstion that busch singed for an additional 3 months if needed which is nice to know. Considering I was only at my job less than 6 months, I got about a months severence pay so its not too shabby! I have just been lounging by the pool all day, doing some yardwork and some projects that I wanted to do around the house like painting and some fixit stuff. I am sending out some resumes and really looking for a place that I will enjoy going too, or at least partially considering I hated my last job so much. Gonna also be hitting the gym and getting in better shape. Things happen for a reason, some people who were laid off when I was were at the company for over 20 years and were really hit hard, it was a rough day. Nice to be paid in the summer while just lounging by the pool, I am working on my tan! LOL Be good all!
How do you manage to get six weeks severance and unemployment BP? I was under the assumption that one was not eligible to receive unemployment insurance benefits while receiving separation-related payments?

although i agree with everyone's post, i must say your weekly benefit is the highest payment on the planet -- even ny who has the highest benefit -- is $405 and of course you have to be making quite a large yearly salary to get that.
notbillgates is correct and that also is incredible -- especially when severence is paid based on years at the particular firm. unemployment is also based on that. 6 months and your unemployment benefit is more than donald trump would get...in short you are getting the ungettable --you will have trouble finding work doing anything that pays you as much for doing absolutely nothing. i am just stating the facts and i don't it?

Wow, when I calculated in the Federal Income Tax and Social Security (knowing BP is married and has a son from a thread he posted) that would make $651.25 per week in Unemployment. $2800.38 per month. $16,802.25 for six months. And additional $8401.23 for the extension the "W' granted. That's $25,203.78 to sit by the pool and work on one's tan. Wow is all I can say. You're sure one lucky dude BP! Be careful and don't take Valium and fall asleep by the pool. Those sun burns can cause melanomas!

I got laid off around 3 months ago, with a weekly unemployment check for $267. Not too shabby seeing as how I was only pulling $311 a week working full time. I do miss my med insurance though -=/
...I got a packet describing severance and they listed the positions cut with only ages of people let go
There is no place in America, the free world or otherwise that would give an exiting employee the ages of people let go.
You are so full of it.
There is also no place in America that will pay the equivalent of $33,000/year pre-tax for unemployment on top of severance. Maybe he needs to look more closely at this packet.

SO FOR EVERYONE WHO BELIEVES THIS -- MR BACKPAIN IS NOT TELLING THE TRUTH IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM.
notbillgates was closetobillgates here.
i do not understand what the motivation of the original poster is -- and i do think honesty is most important and you are not honest bp. so this is not a mean post it is my disappointment in having everyone feel sympathy for ?

He's kid's play compared to the poster that told everyone her daughter and grandchild died and was back posting about tracking numbers or something a couple of days later. either.
And when asked HOW they died, she never said.

I can only say that after a big corporation that my mother worked for outsourced to Japan and closed down she got 10 weeks of severence pay as well as unemployment, though living in the south, it was not that much per week but that was also 7 Years ago and I know she was getting over $300 per week then. So who knows. I'm not up-to-date- on unemployment as I've never been on it, but I've known quite a few who have.

Severance pay in most states does not affect unemployment benefits. ***See below for more specific explanation***
Severance would almost always be based on how long you worked somewhere, but the unemployment in most states is based on income during a "base period". This is usually the first four of the last five quarters. Your salary during that time period is averaged and you then receive a percentage of that. So the job he had before this one would actually play a bigger part in determining the amount paid in benefits.
(info courtesy of part-time job last year in my state's department)
***in a few states it will reduce the amount, but not in all, and there are all sorts of exceptions, an example is if if you have been with your current employer (the one laying you off) less than 9 months, the severance pay would not usually lower the benefits. Michigan lowers it, Mississippi usually does not, and so on.
I should have said also that severance pay only lowers the unemployment benefits the week or weeks you actually get paid the severance. So if he was paid sev over 4 weeks, after that the une
