Where to go for anxiety?

OK... First off I am new to this board, but have read a lot of posts and look forward to talking with everyone.
My situation is... I have problems with anxiety, especially when it comes to going out. My anxiety has gotten very bad, and affects my every day life. I am often afraid to leave the house (I end up staying home for extremely long periods of time), and do not participate in the simple activities because of the anxiety I have. I would not consider myself a bad looking person, but I often fear people will talk negatively about me (when I know in the back of my mind it cannot be true), One of of my neighbors who has seen me stay home so long calls me "caveman," I laugh it off but it really hurts. I was prescibed xanax by a no records doctor, which isn't the best way I know, but it definitely worked wonders for me. I was going out, meeting new people; and now I feel like I am back in the same old rut again.
My main question for everybody is where do I go to seek medical help? I do not have insurance and do not have much money. I contemplated going to a walk-in clinic, but I talked to one doctor that said all he could prescribe me was an SSRI and suggest a therapist (I really can't afford to pay for multiple sessions). I was thinking about going to a general doctor, getting a physical; and asking him about my problem at the end. What do I say if he prescribes me an SSRI? Would I be better off going to a ROP?
Thanks in advance.

I work from home right now.. althought I do suppose that would contribute more to my dread of going out.

I have a love/hate affair with Paxil.
Love: it saved my life. I was a crazy, bitter, enraged monster who would yell at people for looking at me in restaurants and treated salespeople in clothing stores like shite. After Paxil, I'm ME. I'm not seeing people whispering and thinking, "OMG they are talking about me". I don't care who the hell looks at me now. I'm happy.
Hate: I will never go off it. It's there to stay. It makes you violently ill if you even miss a couple days (which, yes, I know you shouldn't, but I was poor and without insurance at one time...). I have tried to go off it twice to try something else, both with horrible results. And I am serious when I say this: if my new psych. wants to try and take me off it again, I will only do it in the hospital where I can be monitored.
SSRI's are great for some people. Like I said, mine is here to stay and I'm ok with that. I've learned to deal with it. Benzo's are just a band-aid, I think - which are nice in times when I'm in the midst of a panic attack. But the Paxil keeps me from becoming the Incredible Hulk, and I'm cool with that.
And that's my story. The end.

I took Paxil for several years-the last year that I took it was to avoid the unpleasant side effects discontinuing the drug. They do go away, for me it took about six weeks. You could start tapering down and once you get finished start titrating upwards on a newer medication. There are better options out there. I took it for depression and anxiety. I figured out after I got off it that I was actually less anxious off Paxil then without anything at all. It also made me go from weighing 115lbs to 155lbs in a year!
You don't have to reconcile yourself to taking something that is just keeping you out of withdrawals--there are ways around this, but better leave that to the doctors. Good Luck!
