Western Union is easy and very convenient. It can be done online and at any rite-aid, Safeway, corner stores...etc...

I've never done Moneygram.

My only complaint is that WU is expensive. ~$20 or so for $100. That's a 20% surcharge...which is a lot...

Thanks. I have never used either one so didn't know which was better to use. And I do have a Safeway close. Thanks again.

MoneyGram all the way!! MUCH less hassle than WU, and way less expensive. 9.99 flat fee (I've set up orders for as much as 400), and if done in person, no invasive questions or hassles.

I'd say moneygram, less intrusive questions and a little cheaper in my country.

MG asks for social security # for online transactions. Not sure about in person. I only use WU.

I sent cash to India today via moneygram, and the guy that served me happened to be Indian. He was asking me all kinds of questions about my friend in India and how I new him. Had to make up a load of [censored] on the spot.

Think he was just trying to be friendly though!

Money Gram is much cheaper (almost 1/2 price), but some providers have a relationship with their Western Union provider or it is more attractive because of the many different franchises (less attention/closer).

UTJF I can understand your story. My guy was asking me all of these questions the other day and I made up this story about my brother serving in the military, abroad. I made up this whole BS about his girlfriend spending all of his dinero. It is my fault because I became really friendly with him over the past few months.

Hrmm.. I use Western Union often and it is 79cents. I've sent $450.00 for , yes, 79cents. The grocery store is even cheaper.

Is this a wire or soemthing that is costing you guys all this money?

I guess I am missing something really obvious here \:\)

I'm referring to Money Orders, this has to be something different. I just hand over the cash, or swipe the card and I get the Money Order for X amount. Surcharge 0.79cents.

I think we are talking about sending money from one branch/web (wire money) site to another branch around the world. I used WU the other day and they charge around $12 for a little over $200, but I think it depends on the destination country. Money Gram charges around 7 or 8 bucks for this same amount (Depends on the destination country). All my totals are off the top of my head so if you want exact numbers go to the specific web sites. Money orders are really cheap, but I think we are talking about something different.

I agree. I always have to call WU to confirm and go through uncomforatble security (for my safety) questions.

Not only did Moneygram want my bank acct #, they wanted me to fax a copy of my photo ID (drivers license) and a copy of said bank acct statement. Crazy. To me all that did was scream ID theft. I don't think all that info was necessary, unless they wanted to rob me. Call me paranoid, but forget that. Oh, Also wanted to know, who? why? WHERE? and if I was going to use them to purchase anything or just send money to this person. Way to many questions for me.

That's odd, Orangegirl. They asked for next to nothing from me when I did it online. WU on the other hand, wanted more extensive info. Guess it just depends.

If you ever try to make a Moneygram payment over the internet, and they call you to verify the transaction, be sure to tell them that you know the recipient and that you are NOT purchasing goods. I was naive and had no idea that sending money via WU or Moneygram for the purpose of purchasing goods or services was forbidden. Now I can never use Moneygram online again to send money. They have "blacklisted" me! =(

I use moneygram, no one has ever asked me any questions. I find it odd that someone would ask for all that info -- I would be concerned.

They called about 15 minutes after I submitted the online transfer, and the agent said she just needed to verify the transaction. She verified my name, the receiver's name, and the amount, and then she casually asked me, "Are you paying this individual for goods you are purchasing?". Stupidly, I said yes, and she immediately told me that was forbidden by their policies, and that she was cancelling my transfer.

She never mentioned me being blackballed, but I have tried to use their service several times since then and each time they accept my transfer but then cancel it after-the-fact. Sometimes they call me, sometimes not. They have never given me a reason for transaction being cancelled; even when asked they just reply "The transaction is not authorized and that is all that I am allowed to tell you, sorry."

P.S. This was the very first time that I had ever used Moneygram, so that might be why they called. Also, I was sending money to Packistan. Honestly, I got the feeling that everything was fine and dandy once she asked the amount, the question about purchasing something seemed like one of those things that she tacked on because she was required to ask on every transaction, and I think that is what triggered the decline of the transaction. Of course, I could be wrong.

Hi BGB,

I just read your post, and with all that's going on in the Middle East, maybe that's the reason.

I have used both moneygram and W.Union, and no question, ever. That would freak me out!

Of course, they aren't going to be honest in their responses, the employees aren't required to ask that question about purchasing online, etc. I know someone who works at a check cashing store, that does W.U., moneygram, and she told me "who cares" about why, what, or where.

I would use W.U. at a Walmart, or any other big store. And IF they ask any questions (which I doubt) say you're sending it to a relative.

Good Luck,

fisher

Yes, the destination country could have played a big part in the call from Moneygram. I really wasn't freaked out though; it seemed very routine and professional.

I've sent Western Union and Moneygram transfers in person several times, to various countries including Pakistan and I have never, ever had anyone ask a single question. I usually just go to a grocery store or Wal-Mart or something like that to send them.

You do have to sign an agreement saying that you personally know the recipient and that you are not purchasing goods or services, whichever service you use. But nobody's ever said anything about it to me.

I today wired some money using Western Union, in person. A couple of hours later, the W.U. security department called me at home and said there was a "security issue" with my receiver's name. They told me to call back with the receivers's phone number and address. I don't actually have that info. Just a name and city, CA. I'm awaiting an email back from the company to get that info, but I am freaked out! Any suggestions or help appreciated. Thanks in advance,
RS

What you're going through is what's stopped me from ordering the same way you did. I just don't trust sending money to somebody with a name like Afenia Shlombosky (made up, but close) and then hope it'll be alright. Don't freak, remain calm, don't allow yourself to feel intimidated. This is just you sending some money to a friend's friend or whatever, charity even. Remember you aren't purchasing any goods. Tell them you gave WU all the info you had and just ask if the money is going through, if not tell them to refund the money, you know nothing about any security problems. Let us know what happens. Good Luck

I sooo appreciate your taking the time to respond, SoHo. I did in fact, get the address only, called back WU and gave them what I had, and after a few (long) minutes, they cleared it for immediate pickup. Yikes, don't think I'll be doing that again. You're right, tho, I shouldn't have been so freaked. I almost required meds for that too! Thanks again,

I know exactly how you felt, and at some point in my old age caught onto intimidation tactics. Now you have too. I'm glad it worked out for you. One thing about the use of "official power" caught my attention when I learned that anything you say to the police in conversation can be used against you, so using the miranda script is avoided quite a bit, while you're spoken to like a friend, and then arrested. I had to check that out with quite a few sources before I could actually believe that. But, no you are not safe with law enforcement "just telling them stuff" because nothing is off the record.

For some time I was getting shipments from Pakistan and on serveral occasions the postal clerk commented on the scary faces on the stamps and commented on how she was nervous about any package coming from this part of the world. This occurred a couple of times with different postal workers and I dont believe they were concerned about shipping meds from this area of the world.

Has anyone ever seen postage stamps from Pakistan? Believe me they attract attention.

Dont use Moneygram online nor WU online. Use Wal-Mart or some little Kiosk in a grocery store. They dont ask jack about the transaction in person and with cash but if you try it online you will get the 'rubber hose' interrogation treatment.
