Lorazepam (Ativan) Lorazepam, an antianxiety agent, has the chemical formula, 7-chloro-5-(0-chlorophenyl)-1,3-dihydro-3-hydroxy-2H-1,4-benzo-diazepin-2-one. Tablets: It is a nearly white powder almost insoluble in water. Each Ativan tablet, to be taken orally, contains 0.5 mg, 1 mg, or 2 mg of lorazepam. The inactive ingredients present are lactose and other ingredients. Injection: Lorazepam injection, a benzodiazepine with antianxiety and sedative effects, is intended for intramuscular or intravenous route of administration. Lorazepam is a nearly white powder almost insoluble in water. Each ml of sterile Ativan injection contains either 2.0 or 4.0 mg of lorazepam, 0.18 ml polyethylene glycol 400 in propylene glycol with 2.0% benzyl alcohol as preservative. Tablets: Lorazepam is indicated for the management of anxiety disorders or for the short-term relief of the symptoms of anxiety or anxiety associated with depressive symptoms. Anxiety or tension associated with the stress of everyday life usually does not require treatment with an anxiolytic. The effectiveness of lorazepam in long-term use, that is, more than 4 months, has not been assessed by systematic clinical studies. The physician should periodically reassess the usefulness of the drug for the individual patient. Injection: Lorazepam injection is indicated in adult patients for preanesthetic medication, producing sedation (sleepiness or drowsiness), relief of anxiety, and a decreased ability to recall events related to the day of surgery. It is most useful in those patients who are anxious about their surgical procedure and who would prefer to have diminished recall of the events of the day of surgery (see Information for Patients). Lorazepam is a benzodiazepine used for the treatment of anxiety, anxiety with depression, and insomnia. Inform your physician if you are pregnant or nursing. Lorazepam may cause dizziness and drowsiness; use caution while driving or operating hazardous machinery. Do not take any other sedating drugs or drink alcohol while taking this medication. Lorazepam may be habit forming. Withdrawal symptoms may occur after you stop taking it. This medication may be taken with or without food.
