First it was the King of Saudi Arabia now the Japanese monarch.
So embarrassing. It's common protocol to bend from the
neck and shoulders not the waist.
It implies subservience or could that be the message?

Are you effing kidding me? You are ignorant rochelle; I happen to have Japanese clients in my business, and bowing is pro forma (very much like the handshake here), it is not some sort of subservient gesture, but is one of mutual RESPECT (and, yes, I do bow to my customers, as they do to me.) I admire Obama's willingness to observe the cultural niceities of our allies. Please do not comment on what you don't KNOW.

I dunno, tiger. Maybe Rochelle was joking?

Even though I don't agree with everything she writes, I couldn't imagine that anybody in today's world could be that culturally uncouth.

If you desire the respect and cooperation of an elder( any) Japanese man, political or in business, bowing is the correct way to express that respect. It is culturally correct just as a handshake is in this country as a greeting.
The Japanese culture has been around for just a few thousand yrs longer than the western culture that was based on a different set of social and cultural values.

There are MANY simple differences in cultures. In Japan its considered an insult to count your change at a store where you just paid for something. Failing to return a bow is an insult and leads to closed off communication, sometimes the immediate end of the meeting.
Any American president would return a bow with a Japanese leader.I can assure you that Obama was coached well before he ever stepped foot on AF-1. The whitehouse has an extensive team that knows exactly what is proper and what is not around the world. In fact, the advance-travel team gets coaching from the other party on proceedure and how every minute will progress in a public meeting like this. They reach agreeement and THEN the trip takes place.
The Japanese were coached in a similar fashion.

Japanese greeting bow (ojigi) can be done by bending at the waist 15-45 degrees depending on type of message sent. 45 degree bow is or can be done showing great honor or deep apology.

Oh I understand, but remember that there are "beliefs," and there are Facts, and some people tend to mistake one for the other.

I have many japanese friends and clients and they bow
and when you bow they bow back and it keeps going till
someone stops. I have also been to Japan.
I just have never seen anyone bow so low like that.
You know below the chin.
If everyone bowed that low we'd be knocking our heads ..lol. grin

From: Dave Barry does Japan (one of the funniest books I have ever read in my life):

Quote:
On bowing:

This happened quite often. It started when we arrived at our hotel in Tokyo. As I was descending the steps of the airport bus, two uniformed bellmen came rushing up and bowed to me. Trying to look casual but feeling like an idiot, I bowed back. I probably did it wrong, because then they bowed back. So I bowed back. The three of us sort of bowed our way over to where the luggage was being unloaded, and I bowed to our suitcases, and the bellmen, bowing, picked them up and rushed into the hotel. We followed past a bowing doorman into the hotel, where we were gang-bowed by hotel employees. No matter which direction we turned, they were aiming bows at us, sometimes from as far as twenty-five yards away.

It's an "optical delusion," Rochelle.

It only looks like the big O is bowing so low because of the difference in height between the two...The angle from which the photo was taken probably has something to do with it, as well.

The "article" was an opinion piece, and certainly wasn't a guide to proper conduct when the President is in Japan. Obama's deep bow was proper, and respectful, and certainly wasn't as odd to me, or as laugh worthy, or as "sub-servient" as when George Bush held hands with, and smooched, that Saudi Arabian Prince.

Once a Thai (?) princess came to my dh's place of work in DC. They were told it was considered very rude to have their feet pointing at her. So I guess they all stood duck footed or whatever. Odd, really.

Maybe O'Bama was told about the chest bow and thought it meant to bow to the level of the other man's neck and chest.

That would explain it.

And I don't know if I've ever seen so much jabber about nothing as I have since Obama began to run for president. It's done little but grown shriller and sillier since he was elected.

I want to see one of those cartoon bubbles with words coming out,

The Prez should be saying, "Wow! Is that real marble?"

Or maybe-- " Don't anyone move, I think I lost my contact"

Rochelle, you always come up with the best photos. I have family in japan and there are many Rules of conduct and small things that can and can not be done properly in manners of showing respect and disrespect, I will email this photo to my brother in law and see what he says about the bow. he has lived there for like 25 years now and has explained the many cultural differences to me but I have not paid attention. When he speaks that language he just sounds angry but has taught my kids a few words and phrases. He used to have to tell us what their pokeman cards said that he would send for christmas as they were from there and had no english on them.

Take care Rochelle, hope all is well and maybe we can put a bubble on that pick and have a contest for the best caption.

Well, Bush kissed his Arab buddies, Obama bows. Think I'd rather see him bow than kiss all of these leaders. It might start another conspiracy. OBAMA FOUND TO BE GAY. HE SMOOCHES WITH WORLD LEADERS. OMG! I can see the headlines now. LOL

I see nothing wrong with bowing. I believe it's only a sign of respect and there's nothing wrong with it. You go with the protocols of the country you're visiting. JMO.

There are many bows in Japanese culture. How did the other guy bow? In the photo it looks like President Apologist is almost grabbing his ankles.
