Has anyone done this procedure, radioactive iodine to obliterate the thyroid? One of my doctors wants me to do this procedure as I have been on tapozole for 3 years now. My thyroid hormone levels are not consistent and the side effects of the tapozole add to my migraine issues. The constant adjustments in dosage wreak havoc with my head!! I am leary of the iodine as my doctor has also mentioned that 5% of people who take it end up with persistent lethargy, weight gain and other symptoms. I am afraid of making a bad situation worse. Has anyone done this? Any info you can share I would be grateful for. Thanks, tj

I have never heard of this procedure, but it sounds extremely dangerous. 1 putting anything radioactive into your body is going to be seriously harmful to your body, and 2 obliterating the thyroid gland as you put it (I'm taking it to mean destroy) is extremely unhealthy as the thyroid gland is a vital part of the human anatomy.
The thyroid gland is responsible for hormone production and other important bodily functions.
Honestly I would choose another doctor simply for suggesting such a barbaric treatment. This, in my opinion, is a perfect example of some of the things seriously wrong with the medical practices of today.
I'm no doctor, but I would seriously reccomend not doing this procedure or at the very least extensively researching the procedure and any advantages (if there are any, which I doubt) the procedure provides, & most importantly the dangers of the procedure. Also I suggest researching why the thyroid gland is an important part of the body and what exactly its function is just to give you an idea of what this procedure may do to you.
This is actually a common procedure for Graves disease. I agree it doesn't sound good but I have been under treatment for thyroid disorder for quite a while and the drugs make me sick. Thanks for your input though. After treatment the patient goes on synthroid to replace the thyroid hormone.

However I would look into alternatives if I were you. Destroying a major gland in your body is nothing to mess around with, whether or whether not they replace it with a synthetic thyroid gland. I know the thyroid absorbs iodine which is an essential mineral & am not sure whether or not the synthetic thyroid would be capable of doing this. As I said I would first look for alternatives such as homeopathic/herbal medicine or a simple change in diet as you may just not be getting enough Iodine in your diet which coupled with excessive fluoride intake causes severe thyroid dysruption and this could be the root of all your thyroid problems.
I'm just saying your body should be the thing you charish most & I would first look into all alternatives before doing such a radical & most likely expensive surgery. Best of luck to you.
I'm happy to assist you in researching alternatives and posting any helpfull information I find or helping you in any other way if you like.
There are two approaches - one is to take a compounded T3 (you have to have a doctor set this up but the website lists doctors that follow this treatment plan) or there is also a nutritional approach.
As soon as I can find a doctor in my area that will utilize this method, I plan to try it. I don't seem to respond to synthroid but just taking T3 once a day caused me to have heart palpatations.
If it were me, I would try this treatment plan before resorting to something so extreme.

My sister and two other women I have known have taken the radioactive iodine route. In my sisters case, it took a long time to get just the right dosage of synthroid, afterwards. This problem seems to be common and she will have to take synthroid the rest of her life. She seems to be doing fine now.
Another option that is (or was) used was surgery to remove part or all of the thyroid and it was said that it is generally easier to get the dosage of synthroid right with the surgical method.
Mind you that this was 15 years ago and there may be better options now? I'm sure one of the more knowlegable people will respond on this.
My mother had an under active thyroid and had to take a small dose of synthroid every day for 30+ years.
Get a second or third opinion from a specialist before doing anything, if possible.
Thanks for all the input. My thyroid is hyperactive. I get heart racing and tremors when the hormone suppressant that I am prescribed isn't at the right dosage. But my bloodwork month to month changes and the dosage has to be constantly changing which messes with the headaches I get. I will have migraine auros 5-7 times a day when the meed is changed. It is a major problem in my life. The doctor has wanted me to do the radioactive iodine for some time. I am going to look into the t3 website but it looks like that is for underactive thyroid. Thanks again all.

Hello, This is the BEST treatment plan for yourself. I work with a lady who had this done 20 years ago and she is so greatful for it. It is an iodinge injection that yes, is radioactive ( about as much as you would get from flying in airplane). Also, my cat had this done after being on tapozole for a year. Since I was concerned about his liver over time I had the treatment done,it's been 2 years and he is back to his old self and hyper thyroid free now! DO IT! It is not dangerous and believe it or not a very common procedure here in California. Take care and best health, Melissa
