This would be extremely disturbing if most of the sites they reference really don't seem like the type of sites educated folks from here would visit. If these sites were on target...how did they get this information.

Quantcast is a very neat site. There's a firefox plugin that cuts down on all the cookie crumb trails your leaving behind.

Interesting but know this site is about as accurate as Alexa. And if don't know, Alexa is hardly accurate.

Some of the info makes sense and most is just wrong, outdated, or misleading.

they average it regarding the sites you visit. not to say they are accurate but they figure if you are visiting the wall street journal web site then you are in a higher income bracket, if you are visiting college humor then you are in a lower income bracket...etc as someone else said... COOKIES... yum yum yum

always clear your cache and history or use private browsing and clear your cookies every time you close your browser (or set to no cookies allowed and they cant collect any info, although many sites will not work properly if they can not set cookies) i have mine set to only allow cookies to sites i visit. then i dump them before i close my browser.

It simply looks at the demographics of people based on IP addresses. It is not exact. Quantcast basically sees us as well of white people, mostly over 40.

i am relatively new here and was doing my homework, just getting familiar with the site Rules, perks, etc. rick can you tell me which firefox add-on you are talking about, to cut down on cookie trails? i want to download it. thanks!

It's probably Cookie Culler, though CCleaner will do the same and more besides. For a free program, things really don't get better than that. You can also manually delete cookies in FF, and choose not to accept any in the first place, or no 3rd-party cookies.

Alexa gets even more detailed with demographics and all. (click on the tabs across the top of the page for different info)

there is another site that will even show top posters and clickthroughs etc. i will have to look for it. cant remember off the top of my head.

I use CCleaner and every time I get off the internet I run it. Just 2 clicks and all those temp files, cookies, etc. are gone. I love it!

thanks for the info - i think my spyware doctor gets rid of the cookies and other adware when i run it.

Why run Spyware Doctor to get rid of cookies when you can simply delete them? It makes the scan take longer, and deleting cookies yourself guarantees that they are deleted.

Use Mozilla Firefox and set it up to do it by itself every time you get out of Windows. Also deletes browsing history. And much faster that IE.

So, if I were to delete all my cookies, would that cause me to lose some of my settings for sites I visit - for example auto-login?

some but not all. depends on who you use and how you have it set. i use google chrome then use the incognito window so every time you close the browser it clears the cookies,cache and whatever else you set it for. no matter what i'm doing ,i'm clearing all the time. thanks to the info from this thread. thanks fb

It will not be long before people's ip addresses are listed, just like their old land line phone numbers.

All websites have the ip address that you used when you logged in, or even browsed, in a big file. No cookie needed for that.

The websites actually have automated processes, depending on what O/S they run, that will tell them where (approximately) the geographic connections are coming from in real time.

And if you at a large website consolidator, like Akamai, then you can get all kinds of cool info, from the same ip, because while that person thinks they are traversing multiple physical sites, they may actually be on a SAN or NAS that is hosting multiple websites.

So, say the ip address orders goods at one website, using their name, address and phone number, and there was some tiny little blurb that the person behind that ip address never read saying "by clicking NEXT you agree..."

One of the things you agreed to, is letting the website gather all that info. Where you are, the website you were last at before you got to this one, and when you leave that website, the next website you have gone off to.

No one is invisible.

And when every ip address is made public, (hey, they said it would never happen with cell phones, and that went through without a peep) oh well, I am one of the paranoid ones who believes that there is that great big database that tracks all your movements at all times. I know all the seperate pieces exist. Just a matter of time before everything is hooked up and searchable.

Everything is available if you have the right knowlege, friends, or money. Nothing is secret or sacred for the vast majority of us.
