Anyone know if it's better to refrigerate benzos in sealed dark glass vials or to keep them in a drawer at about 85 degrees?

I would say that it would be better to keep them at controlled room temperature (59-86 degrees) than to refrigerate them imo.

Take care,

RP, Don't ever refrigerate them. They will get moisture in them. Find a breadbox or something if that helps.

Thanks for the replies, I guess I'll just keep them in a drawer.

I just found this on rxlist.com for Klonopin-

Store at room temperature (77 degrees F or 25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Brief storage between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) is permitted.

Anyone know of a cheap way to keep my meds at around 77 degrees when it's 85 degrees inside my house.

my system is set to go to 80 during the day when we are at work, then it kicks to 76 at 4:00 so it is cool at 5 or 6 when we get home. my medication from my PM doc which includes some benzos have never suffered any deterioration or anything of the like. given, i get a months worth at a time, so i dont have medication sitting around for long periods. but i don't think 80deg is going to hurt benzos as long as they are stored in a dark dry spot. (and never keep them in the medicine cabinet in the bathroom)

as i have stated in another thread a few years ago, i once found a few hydrocodone that were about 5-6 years old after falling and injuring the back and knees. was looking for some APAP and there they were! anyway, they sat in a kitchen cabinet for years in this climate and they worked just fine. so i dont think that sitting in 80 - 85 degrees is going to hurt them. it is when you approach long periods of 95 - 100 degrees for longer periods, sunlight, or moisture that will make them degrade.

JMO and experience.

Ok, so I can either shove them inside a woman, freeze my house, give them to a stranger, or overdose.....I'll see you all in the afterlife:)

You can buy a small cooler, get one of those plastic shell ice things that screw into the top or bottom.
Then wrap saran or zip lock over the pills.
Then insulate them inside a large cloth or towel.
That should keep them cool for 12 hours until you change the cold-pack. But not too cold and it won't be a moist environment. If it's a small cooler, like 6-pack size, it can be stashed anywhere in the house inconspicuously.

I don't want to do anything which requires work.

Someone should make a container you can place in the refrigerator which can keep the contents at a certain temperature. Now that is a million dollar idea.

I wonder if that's even possible without a power source, anyone know?

The more I think about it the more I think it's impossible. How about a refrigerator manufacturer make a refrigerator which can house pills at a temperature that we choose. Who wants to help me write letters to all the manufacturers suggesting this??:)

It's called a vacuum flask, though eventually the contents of the flask and the fridge compartment will become the same temperature. The better the flask design (such as silvered internal walls) the longer it will take.

So, cool the flask in the fridge, with the top OFF (very important). Periodically check the internal temperature of the vacuum flask with a thermometer (bearing in mind it will be coolest at the bottom, so replace the lid and tip it upside down a few times), and once it's at 15 degrees C or so then place the meds in it and just store it out of the sun.

Make sure you don't tip the flask with the thermometer inside because the glass wall of the flask will break.

When the temperature rises to above the desired limit, give the flask another fridge session, and repeat.

Or, have air-conditioning in one room in the house.

I think the air conditioning would be the best for the pills and yourselves. If not, how about a $12 fan? think

The problem with fans is that they actually make the room warmer, unless you're blowing in cool air from somewhere else. They move hot air away from your body and help evaporate sweat, which cools you down personally, but the poor benzos won't feel any benefit.

Ok then back to square one. I guess just keeping them in a drawer would be cooler because it is dark. I actually have a couple of fans blowing out of the window to get the heat out of the house. Works pretty good.

Yes it depends on the sun, and removal of hot air via open windows, but something a lot of people don't realise is that if you use a fan in a closed room it actually makes the room warmer because heat is generated in the electric motor, and it has no way of extracting heat energy from the air.

The upstairs rooms are usually hotter than the downstairs rooms (I can feel the difference as I climb the stairs), so using fans to blow cool air from downstairs, upstairs, and then out of a window, can work. It will help if a downstairs window is open as well, behind the fan, otherwise the lower pressure in the house may cause the expelled air to re-enter in order to equalise it.

I have a 'portable' aircon unit that vents outside via a lodged window. It works very well but the compressor is noisy. Still, I'd rather sleep through the deep hum and whir of the unit rather than drench the bed with sweat.

Since I have worked 3rd shift for the past 5 years, I have a box fan running in there no matter what the weather. I can't sleep if you can hear a pin drop. I lost electricity due to a storm and I woke up immediately. Couldn't go back to sleep until the power was back on.
I also sweat in my sleep and get drenched. Most of it is due to my night sweats and "The change". Sometimes I wake up and change my clothes.

Yes indeed, I use my air conditioner as a fan even when it's cold to block out the sound of my neighbour's TV. They are elderly and have it on loud because they are deaf to an extent I suppose, but it shows that it's not always the kids who are noisy.

The brain tends to disregard any continuous sound which is why we can sleep better with such a noise than with sounds that vary or are occasional.

I took a clonazepam pill which was in my car for a couple of months and it worked just fine and was minty. The temperature in my area usual reaches a high of between 100-110, so you can just guess how hot it gets in my car. I guess heat doesn't effect clonazepam pills as strongly as I thought.

I know they make animal and plant aquariums that are highly accurate and specific in controlling both heat and cold simultaneously. Obviously you would not want to put water in the unit for your purpose:) If your trying to eliminate sunlight use simple window tint. Just a thought.........I suppose it depends on how anal & extreme you are trying to take the storing of your medication.

You should tell them to get some of those TV headphones. I should by some for my Nan because she has her TV so loud, her neighbours will one day end up strangling her.

what's the std for all drugs...that they're kept between something like 25 - 85 degrees F, in a dark dry place? i would think refrigeration would be way too damp (as others have said).

a drawer in a dry cellar or temp-controlled room probably fits best for long-term storage.

The thing about the hard of hearing on the elderly is that's only the high-pitch sounds (treble) that they lose. A decent pair of speakers with a good-quality tweeter and the ability to adjust the treble upwards would solve the problem. That's why my dad says I have too much bass; it's because he can't hear the treble so music sounds too bassy for him. Strangely, he also has the TV on way too loud, AND has the subtitles on. The point?

My neighbours I have to keep in with; they've been living there for decades before I came along, and I sleep at strange times.

There was one time though, Saturday morning at 7am after I'd worked all week, when their TV was on full blast. Anyway, they got a sample from my pair of speakers, which are nearly 5 ft tall and over 2 ft deep, and shake the walls and windows down to about 17 Hz. They've never done it again.

On topic, there are some meds which have to be refrigerated - some local anaesthetics like the Ametop brand of tetracaine. Putting meds in the fridge won't make them moist if the top of the container is sealed properly.

i guess you could refrigerate if you knew you had a good seal - only thing is, i believe the manufacturer. didn't do so well in chemistry when i took it in HS, but since these are complex molecules, i'm going to follow their advice.

i figure that central air/heat, a dark drawer i only open when needed, and not in a bathroom where it could get humid is the safest place to store meds for the longest time. *shrug* JMHO.

is anyone here with pharmacological experience that could share?
