I read that the FDA is really close to OK'ing an older trycilic antidepressent for insomnia, the drug is called Doxipen, and it may be a better choice since it isn't habit forming like benzos. The only drawback IMO is it has a long half life, and you can wake up with a hangover..I take Doxipen 150mg for depression so that is how I know it can cause hangover effects at first. After awhile it goes away

Before you start preaching have you even thought that most of us that have to take sleeping medications HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING ELSE and nothing worked? I would love to know something..Are you a doctor or any other kind of medical professional? Unless the answer is yes, stick to answering a posters questions instead of lecturing the person. Have you considered that maybe you are on the wrong forum? I for one took offence at your post.

I feel I need a full 8 hours to feel good the next morning. I like to be in bed by 9:30 as I have to get up at 5:30. At about 8, I take 2 excedrim PM's, and at about 8:45, I take .5mg xanax.

The xanax keeps my mind from racing, and the excedrim makes me tired.

I'm going to choose that he was being sarcastic. Probably just so my head doesn't explode.

I have tried everything out there. Everything. Yes, that too. And that...and that one as well. Does anyone think I would *choose* to expend ridiculous amounts of money and effort for a pill if tweaking my diet and/or having a cuppa helped me?

That is offensive.

So, I choose to believe it was a satirical post. Yeah that's it.

Like most of you, I've tried most everything. But for me personally seroquel worked well for a few years. Thank goodness I dont have the sleeping problems nowadays. Ambien, Sonata, etc. didnt do anything and the benzos wear off too fast and I'd wake up after a few hours. With seroquel I was getting a full eight hours.

Hope you find your magic potion!

I have tried Halcion before and the only problem I find is that I wake up really early. I think it is one of the shorter acting benzos. Don't get me wrong, they put me out fast, and for someone who doesn't need 8-9 hours like I do, they are great, but for me the Temazepam works better because it lets me stay asleep. I have tried Dalmane, which is similar, however, they are too long acting and they leave a horrible taste in my mouth. I also tried Ambien, trazadone, and many years ago was perescribed stuff they don't even have anymore (which is probably a good thing) and out of everything that is available today, I will still stick with Temazepam.

That was an inapropriate thing to say to any poster. We are here to help each other, and Manic Maiden shared her experience with what works for her, so your post IMO was out of line

Although I prefer Ambien, I don't have any right now and don't feel like going to the doctor's office.

What I DO have is 100mg Lyrica pills. A ton of the things. If I've had 4 or 5 nights in a row where I can't sleep or wake up at 2:00 am, I take one of the 100 mg Lyrica and I am asleep until 5:00 am. It's wonderful. I don't do it very often because it does leave kind of hung-over feeling. It's hard to explain, but you may find yourself asleep again a few hours after you get up, if you are sitting still watching tv. If you are moving around you are fine, but sit down and you could be right back asleep!

My PM clinic wanted me to take 3 of these things a day, so I had a bunch of extras, not counting the 3 or 4 bottles I threw away when I started to overflow in them. One night, when my sciatic nerve was really hurting I decided to take one and that was a side effect; a great night's sleep. So they are my sleeping pills now, although only about 1 a week.

I have tried alot of sleep meds and I have terrible dreams on most sleep aids. Well zanax works for me I thing I am a hyper person that cannot shut my brain thinking all the time so it helps. anythings else I have tried gives me dreams that I literally have to be restrained.

I have never heard this so I may be a freak case but to answer you question with my knowlege.

Travelman,
I am not familiar with the IOP toprxsavings, but I did try
Upjohn's Halcion 0.25 mg. tabs from the former IOP (May 2008)
www.medicinegallery.com and I was very, very disappointed in the Halcion. I took one, and felt nothing, later, took "3 at a time" and only felt "slightly dizzy with blurry vision" but I was not sleepy, but frustrated. I was also disappointed in another blister pack product they carried "Roche Valium 10 mg."
as they contained diazepam, but were "watered down" a good bit!
I have tried many sedatives, hypnotics, benzo's, anti-psychotics, like many of you, for insomnia, and I always go back to "Trazodone 100 mg" I take about 1 hr prior to bedtime, I always have a next morning hangover, even after ten years of use, 85 to 90% of the time. I move up to 150 mg. if I am really struggling, but have to allow more time next morning to
"wake up out of my zombie state". I have also tried, Seroquel,
100 to 200 mg. and it is very, very effective in putting me to sleep, and keeping me asleep, but the next day hangovers, IMHO, lasted the one half of the entire day. I understand, the body gets used to this within a few wks or more, but, I wasn't patient enough to stick with them. Finally, I tried Roche Dormicum 15 mg. (midazolam), and these pills frightened me, I felt nothing, then, like 35 to 40 minutes later, I would just
pass out (with no warning, or maybe 1 or 2 minutes at best, &
they were "knock out pills" but I would awaken after 3 or 4 hrs, and they failed to keep me asleep. I twice experienced some sleepwalking episodes, strange eating habits,(evidence next day in kitchen, or had "amnesia" once talking on phone, and I threw the pills out, (at least 30 to 40 tabs) as I didn't trust myself taking them (living alone). I've seen Halcion on occasion on IOP's but they are very expensive, and I am gunshy of losing more money on them, if the Halcion are "watered down" good-looking fakes? Also, benzo's make me feel good, or help me relax, but are not effective in putting me to asleep for 8 hrs. Again, the benzo "Dormicum (midazolam) did not "feel like a benzo" but was a "knock out Mickey Finn type" pill for me.

My psych has me taking 4, which would be 1.0 mg. The max I read is 2 mg. You have to be relaxing for it to work. I sometimes take melatonin with the halcion to help a bit. He's offered to up the dosage, but I dont' want to get tolerant to it. I might take him up on his offer next visit.

HottieAt50 have you ever tried Mirtazapine? 1/4-1/2 of a 15mg tablet melting under the tongue puts me to sleep, when all else has failed me.

Okay so I know I'll get some flack for this but I came across an herbal sleep aid. It's suppose to be good. I try to alternate between Lunesta and herbal sleep aids. I have tried Somulin which had good results but it's not good for when ur under high stress. You have to be calm when you take it. Now I've discovered Lunexor and it sounds good. Put in an order and will report back on quality. Check out their site and scroll down to the testimonials. www.lunexor.com/

Phenibut is not herbal; melatonin is a hormone. Hops is herbal though. At least these substances are known to work. The other ingredients probably won't do anything, but they do list them clearly.

You may be able to purchase the 3 main ingredients separately, which may work out cheaper; you may find that you don't need all 3 and can fiddle with the amounts of each.

If Phenibut is not an herb or hormone then what is it?

Phenibut can be some nasty stuff because the quality varies. You do build a tolerance to it. It is possible if you get the good stuff and take to much that you will sleep on and off for days.

Never ever take phenibut in non capsule forum. I have sensitive teeth and you can feel the acidity. It feels like it takes off the enamel of my teeth. Nasty tasting stuff anyway. It Feels real weird brushing your teeth after taking a spoon full of phenibut.

I stopped experimenting with that stuff. When i developed what can best be described as a ulcer like condition that lasted for days. I still have some but I am afraid to take it.

My husband was also prescribed Trazadone a few years back and he didn't really care for it either....I personally have found that Xnax help me sleep.....even though I am forever more waiting until midnight to take one.....but when I do, I go right to sleep.......I am suppose to take 2 .05 a day for anxiety, but I normally just wait and take 1 at night to help me sleep and that does the trick (most of the time) Honestly, if it weren't for Xanax, I probably would not get but a couple of hours of sleep per night......Even with the Xanax, I only get around 5-6 hours because I forget to take it early enough.

Good luck to you and hoping you will find a med. that works for you.

Okay so I took one and 20minutes later I'm already feeling drowsy. It's a natural feeling drowsiness and not a prescription drug drowsy feeling. I like it already. Will report back with more info.
