im no doc, but here is my experience. and believe me insomnia is horrific! one time i couldn't sleep for a week and wound up hallucinating in the hospital.

so first, if you want to go light try Benadryl 25mgs.

if no good, next i would try to get temazepam 15mgs from your doc. if you have to, get him to up it to 30mgs if it doesn't work for you.

even 5-10 mgs of valium is usually good.

note, all these things wont work for long as you will build up a tolerance.

ambian i would stay away from, it could really f u up. serious amnesia and all sorts of side effects. one weird thing is you can forget how many you took, and keep taking more while in a zombie state. strange drug. but very euphoric...

just my exp. jmo. take from it what you want...

peace...

xanax has such a short half life, whereas Valiums are much longer. try the light stuff i suggested first. if no good, then im pretty sure a val 5mg or definitely 10mg should knock you out.

you could go ambian and it will knock you out, but very addicting and can lead to very strange behavior. they will mess your memory up bigtime.

i would think xanax and valium to be much more addicting than ambian if all are taken on a nightly basis.

if only taken when needed, all will lead to a good nights sleep. (ie, not daily)

They are the WORSE BENZOS for those sleeping seek on ANY consistent basis IMO as well. Occasionally, like funky said is OK, but this is not the course you want to set your ship on. It will sink very quickly.

I have had pretty good success with watching my diet after 1800hrs, reducing caffeine, and have had great success using melatonin.

I would recommend Lunesta. I took it every night for over a year and it was very effective.......no hangovers the next day like some other drugs. The sleep felt very natural and when I woke up the next morning I felt well rested. I was able to stop taking Lunesta cold turkey with no problem. Now I only take it as needed. I will say stay away from Ambien. That was the weirdest sleep drug I've ever taken. I experienced sleep walking and amnesia which was frightening. I remember taking an Ambien one night and about 4 hours later woke up frightened because I didn't know where the hell I was or who put me to bed. My parents urged me to stop taking it and I did. I wouldn't recommend a benzo for sleep cause those can be dangerous and are addictive. Try Somulin which is all natural and works pretty good for a natural drug. What about giving Rozerem a try? That's a prescription one but ask for samples first to see if you like it.

My Dr. recently gave me 50mg Elavil to help me sleep because I am on Suboxone and it makes it hard to sleep through the night. I wouldn't recomend it(elavil) to anyone. I am gonna try to get the Lunesta on my next visit, I hear alot of great things about it.

FYI, after you take the elavil for a week or so, the side effects (groggy, lack of energy, hung over) seem to go away. At least they do for me. I switch from 25mg to 50 mg (I was prescribed 1 to 3 tablets(25mg) per night.

Since I have never heard of Somulin, I performed a brief search for info on it. All I have found is mostly advertising site promoting the product. Then I found this site which appears to be unbiased and informative for those facing sleeping issues. They only recommend a few products they believe work the best in fact. Maybe someone others can provide feedback one their objectivity and accuracy:

http://sleepingpillreviews.com/wordpress/somulin

UPDATE: I could not find any valid information on the 3 products they recommend. In fact, they stated something like "50MG of melantonin is considered effective. Well, I take one or two 3MG tablets, therefore, I have lost faith in their accuracy.

Some more info because it works for me and I take 3mg or 6mg usually: In adults, melatonin is taken in different dosages from 0.2 to 20.0 mg, depending on the reason for using the supplement. The recommended dose is typically 0.5 mg. The appropriate dosage of melatonin varies widely from one person to another. If you have difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep, your health professional can help determine the proper dosage and whether melatonin is right for you.

I've tried most of the benzo sleeping pills and the Z drugs Zopiclone etc.. and i find that 0.250mgs (2 pills) of Halcion (Trizolam) always does the trick for me.

It's strange that you say you take a Halcion to keep yourself asleep after taking a Lendormin. Aren't brotizolam and triazolam pretty much the same, both in effect and same very short half-life? It's almost like double dosing one or the other.

If you are having a sleeping problem, may I suggest going to your doctor and requesting a sleep study?? There they may find the answer to your sleeplessness, or you may just have a temporary bout of insomnia. For me, I have a sleep disorder that requires me to take 300mg of trazodone, 2mg of klonopin and 1 Ambien CR in order to get 7 full hours of refreshing sleep. I have NEVER had an issue with Ambien ONCE in the 8 years that I've off and on been taking it. Not even one slight strange thing has happened to me while on it, except I got drowsy and slept. SOME people have issues with it, not ALL, so it's best to go to your doc, ask for some samples, and try it yourself. Going deep into other drugs is unnecessary unless you have tried all that you can and NEED to experiment for yourself. At least, that's my 2 pence.

yes trazodone always makes me have nightmares and the sleep is not comfortable. I used to be perscribed seroquel for sleep but that is a very serious drug with many side effects i would not recoment staying on that, it leads to diabetes

Few posts in this thread mention or discuss natural solutions like diet, exercise, special teas or various herbs and plants. It seems so many folks just want that MAGIC pill to accomplish everything from sleeping to weight loss.

While some of you indeed need the meds for some of these conditions, most just go directly for the MAGIC PILL approach. I think this is a very bad mistake. Especially when I hear of benzos being used for sleep consistency. This is very dangerous and addictive. Try ANYTHING before taking drugs, especially daily folks.

OK, turning off the the teleprompter. smile

do you practice what you preach?..from your past posts you seem to be very familar with the iop world so i am assuming that you have a special need yourself to obtain meds..did the other alternative ways you just posted about not work for you..

I have never used any benzos solely to seek sleep, so in a way, yes' I do practice what I say. Another factor may be that I do not require much sleep in general. I can run on 2-4 hrs of sleep for months on end. I was really only posing the question as a means to consider alternatives. How many of us do not feel better when we exercise, eat right, and minimize medications? I know I always do when I am in that routine. Maintaining the program, now that is the real challenge IMO.

Well, I have never had a need to take a sleeping pill of any kind in my life, and after reading some of the stories on here for years, I consider myself blessed! One thing I do on a regular basis is exercise, pretty rigorously, and in doing that, I fall asleep beautifully every night. JMHO...

You are spot-on friend. I would grab several 5-20 min power naps and feel like I slept for hours. The odd consequence, and perhaps someone has additional input, is if I napped for any longer than 30 mins, I almost ALWAYS crashed for hours and could not get up.

On a schedule like I was working, is it possible to hit the REM level that quickly? How could those 15 extra mins of sleep just put me completely out cold? This was very consistent and about 15mins seems the work the best for my power naps.
