I have severe insomnia where I will go days without quality sleep and get "goofy" and hurt myself and not recall one bit of it. I have tried everything. I usually rotate Halcion and Ativan when i'm having trouble.

I told my psych (after an incident where I fell on the concrete scraping various places and half my face) that I needed something to either put me down or restrain me, or my hubby was going to have to take me to the psychward when I got like that.

He gave me Zyprexa Zydis, 15mg. The pharmacy had to special order it, and it's very expensive. Luckily for me it was only 15.00, but insurance paid the pharmacy over 600.00 for 30 of them.

I took one before I needed it to make sure I would have no reactions to it. It dissolves under your tongue and takes affect very very quickly. I took it around 11 pm and slept like a rock until 2 pm the next day. I haven't had to take another one, which is great. My hubby has control of them for me, but, it's really not necessary since if I took one, I'd be out very soon.

I just wanted to pass along what my psychiatrist gave me that works in an extreme situation.

I did look it up on rxlist.com and I know what zyprexa is. I'm on other meds though, so don't need to take it nightly, even though he gave me one every day, along with 1 mg. of Halcion. I guess he's pretty generous with the meds, or it's just me, who knows?

Zyprexa has a colorful history regarding very serious side effects that were initially hidden from the FDA during its introduction as an atypical antipsychotic back in the mid-90's.
If these were not completely explained to you by your doctor, please educate yourself through some personal research.
While this drug obviously does not affect every patient in the same way, it is a very powerful medication with a long list of potential unwanted and unexpected contraindications.
It always helps to be aware and able to react to any complications you might encounter.
Hopefully your physician was professional in his treatment of you and I am suggesting something that you have already had explained.
Zyprexa can be a really tricky med.

You DO NOT want to screw around with Zyprexa. That and Geodon can actually MAKE YOU psychotic!!! WARNING YOU! Change to Seroquel instead. Same benefits without the danger and possible adverse reactions. Check out the "abilify thread".

I'm prescribed 100mg Seroquel, 10mg Zyprexa, 2mg Xanax and Ambien 10mg all for bipolar and sleep is what I'm told. I'm keeping a journal of my nightly sleep situation.

Last month I was on 150mg Seroquel, Zyprexa 20mg and 2mg xanax. So my doctor is trying to cut down on my bi-polar meds.

I've tried Seroquel and it was a bust. I won't need this med more than once or twice a month for one night. I have to get to sleep fast when I'm like that. I'm like a 2 yr old drunk, hubby says. I'm a total beeyotch. Once I finally get some sleep, and I crash hard, I sleep for a few days sometimes. It's only going to be used in EXTREME circumstances. Either that, or like I said, go to the psychward. I'm sick of hurting myself due to lack of sleep.

Lack of sleep also raises my seizure level and I definately don't need that. The last one I had caused brain damage and broke my nose, etc. So, I think the few times I will use this med will be ok.

Thanks for the heads' up. Hubby knows to watch out for me and let me know any changes so I can tell my docs. Talk about literally trusting someone else with your life......

I've heard Geodon can be a strong med, my neuro said it was. My psych said in can be. They have cool pens though. I have this collection of med pens, lol.

I agree - be careful with zyprexa. It has caused people to develop diabetes and other condition associated with diabetes. My sister took zyprexa - it made her feel worse - adn then she developed a stomach condition that usually only diabetics get.

OOps, I meant 'lowers my seizure threshold', not 'raises'. It raises my chances of a seizure, duh!

Oh, goody, I can only trust in my doc since he works half days at the hospital and has been a really good doc.

I think he helps me like he does because I was in therapy before I ever got to see him and he knew I where I was messed up and that I wasn't some kind of drugseeker. Sometimes I have an idea what I want, but of course I make it his idea smile

Wow O80, you take a [censored]] load of meds!! Ouch! One is not supposed to combine Seroquel with Xanax and taken with Ambien? WTH? And you take opiates as well. Not a good combo.!!! I hope you wake up every day because I think one of these days you may not. Take caution and you are on WAY TOO MUCH! Not to mention, how can you even function or work?

Jesus christ, that is a lot of meds, LOL.

Right now I have a script for zaleplon (Sunatra or whatever), and Ambien.

I could take them together if I wanted (they are from 2 diff doccs) but I dont need to. So I alternate between days

It might be a lot of meds, but I need them to sleep. I have a horrible sleep problem. I only sleep 8-10 hours with my meds.

If you think this is a lot of meds, you would really be surprised what I was on a few months ago. It's so much I'm embarrassed to say.

I can't stand that attitude - shock over how many meds.

I mean if you are under the care of a doctor and are participating in your treatment by being knowledgeable about what you are being prescribed, then it is, what it is. Nobody wants to be on a million meds.

Pain sucks. Treating pain is really hard. I suspect Oxy that your insomnia is related to your pain.

Hate the shock and the judgment some folks express.

For example, I recently told my dentist (had to) I was on vicodin and cymbalta for chronic pain and he was like Wow, but in a judgmental way not a sympathetic way.

Hate that, really do.

Good post!I support this.No one should judge people over the amount of meds they use,or what kind of meds, and for what reason they take it.
Had people only known the severe circumstances a person could be in,they would have kept their mouths shut.To not get sleep is unbearable. My full understanding to the mainposter.(sorry if my english isn`t perpect)

I agree keep you judgments to yourself, ones who judge usually have a deep closet. Pain is defiantly closely related to poor sleeping. When you are awakened by pain night after night year after year it wears on you. Wish I had something constructive to add to getting good sleep but other than the occasional benzo I have found regular sleeping habits combined with modifying my eating habits the last half of the day help the most for me. I also do not drink caffeine at all or especially the last half of the day.

Good luck
