I would like to get any feedback on walk in pain clinics in Florida. I've heard that they are in almost in every strip mall in South Florida. Some even have people lined up waiting for them to open! Does anyone happen to be in the know on this subject?

Sounds like both my physician and pain doctors offices.

South Miami Pain Center is very good. They don't make you jump through hoops, make you take UA tests or waste your time with anything stupid. You don't even need records for your first script(s). They'll then send you for an MRI and it must show something wrong for them to continue to treat you.

They have posters of Oxycontin in every waiting room and all I did was point to it and say I'd like to try that. Their response was. "We believe in pain" and wrote me 2 scripts. 1 for Oxycontin 40mg and another for 15mg Oxycodone. I was taking Morphine ER and IR so I wasn't opiate naive.

After about a year, they increased my doses to 80mg and 30mg respectively.

They don't take Avmed insurance, which is what I have now so I paid $125.00 about three times but went yesterday to my primary who is going to take over my pain treatment and my co-pay is only $10.

Thanks ButterFly. I live part time in midwest and part time in Florida, Sanibel. How far is Ft. Laurderdale from Tampa or even Ft. Myers. The guy Ive been dating a physician owns pain clinics throughout Fl he also does work for a OCS. I wont go to him because I worry that if it doesn't work out I may be screwed. He offers to write me whatever I need but I feel weird about it and don't want to put his license in jeopardy if anything happened. I know to well how it works because I own a med-fraud company that deals with that. The thing that I noticed is sooooooo diffrent is the doctors in FL seem so willing to write for these meds that midwest docs wont touch with a ten foot pole. Several OCS doctors do work for me on the side and most are from FL. To this day, 10 years after opening my company I still dont why. When I ask them a lot say they are compassionate docs that believe in pain problems. I find it interesting most of the docs I work with know NOTHING about this web site!

You can do the F2F with Consults Direct now, you just do not have to do so until March. Cannot hurt to get a jump on the rush and do it earlier if you are able to do so.

"almost in every strip mall" is an exaggeration. It is true that there seem to be a relatively high number that seem to operate with virtual impunity. But you don't really see them in an average strip mall. It's not like they're located in shopping centers where people would find supermarkets, department stores, etc. When they are in "malls," they're sort of more in places that are groups of professional type offices (like doctor's offices), except that one doesn't always get the feeling that any other doctors that may operate there are all that reputable. Also, they don't all have visible signs, so even if you were to pass them by, you may not notice them. Now, this isn't true of all places, some do have noticeable signs.

As for as people lining up for them... A place that I've been to can't seem to get enough patients. There usually seem to be hardly enough patients at all, actually, and they ask you to "tell your friends" about them. But, they're expensive ($250, first visit; $150 each additional month), and you're supposed to have something to back up the fact that you are in pain. And while they take walk-in's, they charge $50 more without an appointment.

With regard to why there are so many in Florida... First, keep in mind that many of the doctors associated with OCS's were/are from Florida, from what I understand. Many doctors come from Puerto Rico, or places in South America, and Florida seems to be a big mecca for doctors from there. The pain centers themselves may not be operated by doctors South of the Border, but the doctors who work for/in them may come from there.

Every area of the country is different in some ways. Florida also has (or had) a reputation for tolerance of various types of operations that other states don't. And remember that there's no PDMP in Florida either. Finally, doctors are not required to carry malpractice insurance in Florida.

Put all those things together, and maybe they'll provide some of the reasons.

Hi all,

When I lived in S. Fla., rx's weren't a problem, I'm sorry I moved.

Plan on going back Feb. or March. Can't wait!

I live in a state that has a few pain treatment centers, U.A.'s every visit. I have disc degeneration, so over the years it gets worse! I've been hit by a truck, and other things.

I need a dr. that isn't going to put me thru the wringer!

Happy Holidays,

fisher

It seems to me that all the private docs do put you through the ringer now, in fear of getting raided or sued...had a few docs refer me to pain management clinics for this reason

Just one more reason to move to Florida. Next time I have to look for a job (or if I win the lottery!) that's where I'm going.

The only thing that puzzles me is why these clinics request an MRI. An MRI is of no use to diagnose my condition. I had EMG and nerve conduction testing a few years ago, and that shows the problem my family has.

The only time I had an MRI was when I had a torn rotator cuff. DO these pain clinics really make everyone have an MRI or will they accept other forms of testing?

No, they do not make everyone have an MRI. Just like ROPs do not make everyone have xrays and MRIs. It depends on your condition. Mine does not show up on either of those things, so I have alternate records in place of them.

There is a place opening near me in the North Florida panhandle called the Pain Institute of North Florida. Does anyone know anything about this place? I think there is one with the same name in Tallahassee. A sign just went up last week that had the name on it an it is in a small plaza with some other offices in it, but kinda in the middle of no where. Well, the area I live in is all smack dab in the middle of no where. Anyway I was hoping maybe someone here had heard of the place. I just moved to this area from Ohio a few months ago, so I don't know too many people to ask here. Thank you and have a great day all!

Hi....I have a friend who is currently going to a pain clinic in ft. Lauderdale....somewhere on Sunrise Blvd...and they are opening up another one in jacksonville..I do not know when it will be opening up..but perhaps if you google for pain clinics in ft.lauderdale oyu can call around and find out. But I know for sure it will be the Jacksonville, FL area where one will be opening soon. Hope this helps.
