I have schizophrenia and my doctor recently prescribed me klonopin after I begged him to prescribe me Valium he told me he wouldn't prescribe me Valium and that klonopin works just like valium. So I'm gonna ask you all what I wouldn't ask him. Does klonopin have that same "euphoric" feeling as Valium or Xanax. I need to know before I waste my money on the prescription. Thank You.

It has been about 6 years since I have had any experience with Klonopin. I will have to say that I liked them much better than xanex or valium. At that time I had been on Xanex and Valium both off and on for about 4 years. Mostly on. LOL! Anyway seemed to me like the klonopin stayed with me longer.

that's the way docs are. if you had begged him for klonopin, he would probably have given you valium!

I use valium for sleep at night. when I have tried klonopin, I don't seem to be able to shake off the fog until the next day is almost over. it's strange, because valium is the one that supposedly stays in your system twice as long, yet I don't have the sleep-hangover problem at all with it.

I never knew there was a euphoric feeling with benzo's, always thought that was an opiate thing.

short answer: no

but klonopin is the strongest benzo

UNLIKE Valium, which comes with its own built in withdrawal program. half life is like 200 hours, then the active metabolites become valium and keep you going. Takes like a month to eliminate, but it is a free detox.

But, valium is weak.

xanax, to my knowledge, is NOT indicated for schizophrenia, no way!

I would say go with the klonopin, and see how that goes, and tell your doctor about it. Do not go for xanax, not with your diagnosis. Plus, I am sure you need more than klonopin, but that is a doc job, not an iop job.

You don't mention any psychotropic drugs? Are you on Risperdal, Prolixin, or something similar? Have you been on the old-generation anti-psychotics and have tardive dyskinesia, which is why you need something to calm down the shaking? I'm only getting a small piece of the picture, so it's hard to offer advice...

I'm a psychiatric social worker, BTW, so I deal with meds daily... PM if you wish.

I will agree that xanax will become a monkey on your back, I learned the hard way about stopping CT. I ordered some from todo just to suppliment my anxiety meds since I already had valium, it was nice to take during real bad anxiety boughts. One thing I remember with klonopin, I took some about a year ago and I swear, I felt harldy a thing, and this was when my benzo tolerance was fairly low. (I was taking say 5mg of valium most nights), now, I pretty much stick to valium but have gone a bit high on my doses, 20-30mg at once. Otherwise, 10mg does nothing and I feal like I waisted a pill.
A few years ago I tapered for a few months to the point I was cutting 2mg every 2 weeks and my dose got to like 8mg per night, at that time, 10mg really did something and if I tried to take more, like 20mg, man was I knocked out. I need to try to get to that point again. Another thing for the list.
At least I quit smoking!!!! Yeeee, I have been trying cigars, just a few and the mild ones. But I have felt hardly any WD from the cigarets, I do crave them like mad, but my body isn't going out of wack or anything.

I do take antipsychotic drugs. I take risperdal, trileptal, and cogentin. Just to give you some of my history. I've been diagnosed with bi-polar twice when I was admitted to a mental institution but the last two times that I was admitted to an institution I was diagnosed with schizophrenia and my current doctor also diagnosed me with anxiety disorder. Currently the issues I deal with the most are being extremely paranoid, and having alot of anxiety and depression. My antipsychotic drugs have helped with the voices. My doctor prescribed me the klonopin for my anxiety but I prefer Valium because thats what has worked for me in the past. I might give the klonopin a try I'm still undecided. So now you know my mental history. :-)

Greyman: Thanx for the advice

I was on klonopin for sleep for a few years and it never left me feeling foggy or hung-over but valium sometimes makes me feel that way. It's just so weird how our bodies can react so different to the same meds.

I wish I could get ativan - it gives me a really restful nights sleep and I would wake the next day feeling refreshed. Right now I am supposed to be trying remeron but it definitely leaves me feeling spacey the next day so I've been putting off taking it. But, since I haven't been sleeping well at all lately, I suppose I should give it a try.

a very good benzo for the most part imo. the only thing is i build up a tolerance to this stuff super super fast, way faster than with any other benzo ive tried thus far, have no idea why. after a week or two i'm practically immune to the effects of this stuff, even when taking small dosages, which is annoying to say the least. also this one makes me the clumsiest of any benzo.

It depends what you mean by small dosages. 0.125mg would be a small dose, for example.

I suppose that could still be a small dose, depending on your vital statistics. Bearing in mind that most charts say that 0.5mg clonazepam = 10mg diazepam, it's not unreasonable. Some people think that 1mg is a small dose, for example, because it's one tablet (assuming they have 1mg tablets).

The average patient in the UK would probably be prescribed 5mg diazepam 3 times a day for a short while.

Maybe you should try Vista Pharmacy? They sell Roche brand Rivotril at $25 per 30 pills and you can pay by credit card (Visa only). I've never used them before, but I'll probably try their rivotril soon too!

What do you mean by "euphoric" feeling? Xanax and Valium are only meant for anxiety and sleep disorders (and to a lesser extent - convulsive disorders) but *not* for getting a "high" feeling.

Klonopin does not quite have the euphoric effect as diazapam. But, if you take about 6 mgs. it just as good.

It seems like that site posted above always rates clonazepam as being twice the strength that a lot of other references give. My doctor who has me on a taper just switched me from .5mg clonazapam twice a day to 5mg diazapam twice a day. I was always under the impression that in general benzo's are usually multiples of 10 ie. 1mg xanax = 10mg diazepam =1mg clonazapam and so on........

It's not that there's a multiple of 10 rule regarding potency; it's just that manufacturers tend to produce pills that have easy-to-deal-with doses, such as 1mg, 5mg, 10mg, 25mg, 50mg and so-on.

just want to say that i quit klonopin cold about 10 days ago and i never took it every day -- but i also quit sleeping for three days and am sure the two are related. it was super awful.

my doc told me today that xanax is THE MOST ADDICTING and can drive one crazy. i asked him for the least problematic benzo and didn't want klonopin and need to have something in the house for panic -- not for daily consumption. he prescribed valium and i will only take it for an emergency -- so there ya go.

nephro -- thanks so much for your help! think i made it through.

What I was getting at is that the ashton manual seems a bit off to me...... just based on experience and other literature. For instance it suggests that if you are taking clonazapam .5 3x daily, that 30mg of diazapam is the starting equivalent dose. Also 2mg xanax 3x daily = 12 10mg diazapam daily??? That's a lot of alprazolam but 120mg valium???
Also I really hope that the clonazapam equivalent dosage is wrong because that would mean that my dose was cut in half...... that would be a pretty harsh drop in my taper.

Well done Recruiterlo!

Clonazepam and alprazolam equivalencies had been underestimated for a long time (along with lorazepam) compared to diazepam. This is why clonazepam is now available in 0.25mg and 0.125mg doses in the USA.

The 2mg clonazepam tablets are intended for use in epilepsy where tolerance is inevitable. They are not for the rest of the population, but some doctors don't understand this. IOPs don't help much in this respect.

2mg alprazolam pills or 'bars' - well I just cannot justify their existence no matter how hard I try, except to get people addicted. And once someone tries 2mg, they rarely go back down to sane doses as they inevitable feel inferior.
