Hi, after about 20 years of smoking I've decided to kick the habit. This will be my first attempt at quitting and i really want to succeed. I was considering using zyban, and wanted some feedback on success rate and possible side effects.

Zyban and the antidepressant Wellbutrin are exactly the same drug, bupropion. I took the wellbutrin for about 2 years and still smoked like a freight train....still do even now...useless for quitting...nothing is gonna get you to quit but good old fashioned willpower....just put them down, and tell yourself you ain't gonna pick them up again. My dad did it. It worked. My mom--she smokes 3 packs a day--and so do I--My husband..put them down, never to touch again...I think its a guy thing...guys can quite easier than women, I really do believe this.

i quit smoking five years ago, almost to the date, with the help of zyban. i liked the way it made me feel so much(we have a known history of depression/chemical inbalance in our family), i stayed on it for 5 years. my disposition improved greatly, as did my whole outlook on life. i guess, though, i was one of the lucky ones, b/c a lot of people i know just couldn't take it. i just stopped taking it recently. i don't think it was doing anything for me anymore, and that is one less pill to have take.i guess,(and this has been said soooo many times before!) but - everybody's different.
My husband was a very heavy smoker (4-5 packs a day) for over 45 years. Anybody who knew him would never expect him to quit, it was such a part of him.He went through a program at the V.A. for Smoking Cessation (sp.?). They provided him with the nicotine patch and Zyban type pill. It was rough. He was agitated and angry and not pleasant to be around. As soon as he could, he stopped the medications and he hasn't smoked for almost 2 years.I will add that it was too late. He is now oxygen dependent, but who knows how much worse it might have been if he hadn't quit when he did? He is so proud that he quit, and his children and I are so proud also.
I have been smoking for 20 years also. I want to quit very badly. My son thinks I stopped smoking and I really need to do it so I do not have to lie to him anymore. If he ever catches me it will be the worst! I do not want him to know I have been lying to him for the past 2 years. Good luck to anyone who is trying to quit. Maybe we could be each others support system. That makes it easier if someone else is going through the same thing. Like all of us are on DB! Have a great FRIDAY!
